In this “parable” about a poor pearl diver who discovers “the pearl of the world,” Steinbeck gives free reign to his hatred of capitalism. He portrays a system designed to keep the poor in servitude – a climate of greed where suffering is met with indifference and good fortune turns friends and acquaintances into either vicious predators or circling vultures. The prose features vivid descriptions interwoven with an almost dreamy awareness of the “songs” of the family, the enemy/evil, and the pearl. Whatever your view of capitalism vs. socialism, this bleak story packs a punch that leaves a vivid impression of the destructiveness of greed.

  1. I haven’t read this one, although what I’ve read by Steinback has been both powerful and “true” in that way that only good literature can be. Thanks for highlighting it!
